Modern Warfare 3 Is The Worst-Rated Mainline Call of Duty On Metacritic

Mostly Negative Reviews On Steam Too!

Story Highlights
  • Modern Warfare 3 is the worst-rated mainline Call of Duty game on Metacritic.
  • The game has mostly negative reviews on Steam as well.
  • The Call of Duty franchise could use a break after reports revealed that the latest entry was created in just over a year.

As one of the biggest first-person shooter IPs today, the Call of Duty series has undoubtedly solidified its reputation in the gaming community for over two decades. But lately, the franchise has struggled to meet the high bar of quality set by earlier entries.

Modern Warfare 3 is the latest installment in the franchise and has been a disaster so far. The game has performed poorly among critics and fans, becoming the worst-rated entry on Metacritic.

Why it matters: The Call of Duty series is becoming less appealing because its creators are spending too much time attempting to capitalize on the nostalgia associated with the franchise rather than developing original content.

The game is sitting at a score of 53/100 on Metacritic. This is an all-time low for the series, which usually receives scores in the mid to high 80s.

Prior to this title, Call of Duty Ghosts was rated 68/100 on PC. However, with a significantly lower score, Sledgehammer Games’ latest release has taken over the mantle of the worst-rated mainline Call of Duty game.

It is important to note that various outlets have yet to issue their score for Modern Warfare 3. Therefore, this rating may go up or down in the coming days. However, nearly 30 reviews have led to this score on Metacritic.

Over on Steam, the opinions have also been far from ideal, with the entry receiving mostly negative reviews. On this platform, 69% of the reviews are negative, with fans calling it more of an expansion than a full game.

One user on Steam stated:

“Same game $70 update.”

Another user made similar comments, pointing to the reused content from last year’s Modern Warfare 2.

The game is being deemed by many as having the worst campaign out of any Call of Duty release. This frustration is further amplified because it lasts just 4 hours.

According to reports, Modern Warfare 3 started off as a DLC for Modern Warfare 2, but the developers were forced to work overnight and on weekends to complete the game.

The Call of Duty franchise saw widespread success after the Modern Warfare reboot in 2019; however, with each new release since the reboot, they appear to have lost their footing.

Modern Warfare 2019 was the best game in the rebooted trilogy, while Modern Warfare 3 is quickly gaining the reputation of being the worst. Therefore, it might be best for the series to take a break, as Activision is clearly relying on nostalgia and old ideas to try and keep the series alive.

Still, the publisher has already planned entries till 2027, so this is unlikely to happen.
