After Nintendo Switch’s successful reign, it is finally time for the company to move on because the successor is on its way. The release date of Nintendo Switch 2 is always a debate because rumors have been unable to nail an exact window.
Previously thought to be released in early April, the console is now said to target a release window in H1 2025. An analyst has also predicted a much higher-than-expected price for the hardware.
Why it matters: Nintendo has always released affordable consoles since its hardware is never as competent as that of other gaming giants.
Hideaki Yasuda from Toyo Securities predicts that the console will be released in the first half of 2025. He states that Nintendo is likely to launch its latest hardware between April and June.
The analyst also points to a price tag as high as $499. It’s worth noting that the original Nintendo Switch launched for $300. A cheaper version, the Nintendo Switch Lite, was later released for $200.
Therefore, a $499 launch price would be a steep hike for the successor. According to the analyst, the console is unlikely to outperform the PS4 Pro either, making the $499 price tag a bit of a surprise.
For reference, the PS5 launched starting at $400. Therefore, Nintendo may have a hard time justifying its price tag. Perhaps the gaming giant will compensate for the excessive price with exclusive games, but it will be up to the fans to decide if this will be enough.
Previously, leaked specs have pointed to 12GB of RAM and up to 4TFLOPs of power.
The Nintendo Switch 2 is set to rely on Nvidia hardware. This could also be one reason for the price since Nvidia has become infamous for charging customers a premium for its graphics cards. Perhaps Nvidia did the same for this console.
Nonetheless, Nintendo should share official information about the hardware soon. Perhaps the gaming giant has an ace up its sleeve to justify the $499 price tag.
