Yuzu Nintendo Switch Emulator Adds Frame Generation Support

Yuzu Gets Even Better!

The Nintendo emulation community needs no introduction. An active community of developers has enabled new releases like Red Dead Redemption and Super Mario Wonder to be played at 4K/60FPS soon after release.

However, the teams behind popular emulators like Yuzu continue to strive for better performance across all devices. In the latest update, the developers behind Yuzu have added frame generation to the emulator.

The Yuzu team is currently focused on transitioning to a multi-process emulator. However, this transition still needs more work.

The emulator also received support for LSFG 1.0 this month. This is a universal frame generator that increases frame rates without much hassle, though it comes with artifacts and graphical glitches for the time being.

These glitches are more noticeable on larger displays, but LSFG 1.0 comes in handy on hardware that struggles to achieve more than 30FPS. An even better method to improve performance is the use of AMD Fluid Motion Frames.

With a simple registry edit, AMD’s technology can be used on Vulkan, OpenGL, and Direct3D 9/10. This makes it the preferable Frame Generation option for those in search of additional performance.

When compared to lossless scaling, image quality is superior, and the performance increase is particularly noticeable at the base performance of 60FPS.

In the case of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, it can achieve close to 200FPS when using a Ryzen 5 5600X and an RTX 3060 Ti. Below is a video of the game running at native 60FPS for comparison.

This shows that AMD Fluid Motion is better at handling the higher frame rates than LSFG 1.0.

The Yuzu blog clarifies that AMD’s Fluid Motion Frames can be supported on both Intel and Nvidia GPUs. Though it works best with AMD GPUs, the open nature of the technology makes it available to all PC gamers.
