The GeForce RTX 4080 16GB launch did not receive the same response that its bigger brother GeForce RTX 4090 got, as we can see almost every store shelf filled with the latest launch from the GeForce RTX 40-series.
Though the lukewarm welcome of the GeForce RTX 4080 is not a surprise, as it now costs over 71% more than its predecessor, the GeForce RTX 3080.
With the launch of GeForce RTX 4090, Nvidia said that affordable graphics cards are things of the past. But according to a user on Weibo, the situation might be different than what Nvidia portrays.
The Weibo user @daohentai has provided a rough estimate of the total manufacturing cost of the GeForce RTX 4080, which is much lower than the $1200 price tag that Nvidia decided to sell it for.
According to @daohentai, the GeForce RTX 4080 die AD103 costs roughly $150; the same goes for the expensive 16GB of GDDR6X memory and PCB that combined costs $150 as well. So the total manufacturing cost for one GeForce RTX 4080 would be $300. This leaves $900 on the table to cover software development, employee salaries, research and development budget, and advertising.
We can say that Nvidia is making much more than it used to make on the GeForce RTX 2080 and 3080 when mining profits were sky-high. The company made profits much higher than what it used to make. Now that the mining boom has crashed, Nvidia is left to clear out its old Turning stock at MSRP; rather, it would be an understatement to think Nvidia didn’t benefit from the boom.
Whatever the case, maybe Nvidia is a company that has to make its shareholders happy for it to survive and after the success of Turning and high-profit margins from selling to miners. The shareholders of Nvidia expect the same results. Maybe that is why Nvidia decided to charge much more than it used to.
