Nvidia has released several models of their higher-end GeForce RTX 30 series Ampere graphics cards. The GeForce RTX 3080 12GBwas released earlier this year, and the graphics card was not received well due to the value it provides in comparison with the GeForce RTX 3080 Ti in terms of price-performance ratio.
Nvidia later stopped production of the graphics card. Aside from the Vram upgrade, the GeForce RTX 3080 12GB did not offer much over the older RTX 3080. This meant that the graphics card was set up for failure, from the beginning.
However, it seems like the company has resumed production of GeForce RTX 3080 12GB graphics cards. This news comes from a reliable hardware leaker with insider information from board partners.
Because there is too much stock of GA102, Nvidia has resumed the supply of 3080 12G.

The leaker claims that Nvidia has too much GA102 stock. This makes sense, given the current situation surrounding the PC gaming market. Next-generation products are right around the corner, and demand is at an all-time low. Nvidia is likely trying its best to utilize lower binned GPU, which did not cut GeForce RTX 3090 or RTX 3080 Ti.
At launch, Nvidia’s RTX 3080 was considered a great value for the money. The graphics card provided admirable performance at the 4K resolution target without breaking the bank. However, the RTX 3080 Ti and RTX 3080 12GB provided minimal gains over the original. In terms of MSRP, the original RTX 3080 is still a much better purchase. Interestingly, Nvidia never provided an MSRP for the RTX 3080 12GB.
Despite being largely the same product, the RTX 3080 12GB offers a small improvement over the original. The graphics card has 256 extra CUDA cores and a wider memory bus at 384-bit. Nvidia’s RTX 3080 12GB also boasts a higher TDP at 350 watts. This is in addition to the extra Vram in the 12GB variant.
Nvidia has recently reported huge financial losses. The company is doing worse than their previous months, yet Nvidia’s graphics cards have not seen the price drop that many were expecting. Nvidia is likely trying its hardest to get rid of excess inventory, and this might be a last-ditch effort to do so.
With the stagnant demand and the next generation graphics cards including GeForce RTX 4090, 4080, and 4070 right around the corner, PC builders could finally see the price drops that they have been waiting for.
