The release of the GeForce RTX 4080 16GB is just around the corner, though, as it turns out, Geekbench 5 benchmarks were leaked, showing a 15% improvement in performance over the GeForce RTX 3090 Ti.

The upcoming GeForce RTX 4080 was benchmarked on Vulkan, CUDA & Open GL, and a Ryzen 9 7950X.

Regarding performance, the upcoming GeForce RTX 4080 scored 148838 in Vulkan, 300728 points in CUDA, and 248932 points in Open GL. This makes the upcoming GeForce RTX 4080 around 30% slower than GeForce RTX 4090, 15% faster than its predecessor, the RTX 3090 Ti and around 40% faster than GeForce RTX 3080 when it comes to generating-over-generation performance improvement against its predecessor.

The GeForce RTX 4080 will be based on a cut-down version of the AD103-300 GPU with a board power of 320W. But I would take these performance scores with a grain of salt because synthetic benchmarks do not always relate well to real-world results or gaming performance. So, the upcoming RTX 4080 might be much faster than the leaked scores predict.

Furthermore, AMD has just announced two new cards from its Radeon RX 7000 lineup, the RX 7900 XT and RX 7900 XTX. Among the two, Radeon RX 7900 XTX is targeted to compete with the RTX 4080 and does seem to be a better choice overall when it comes to price to performance value, judging from the performance charts that AMD unveiled at the launch event.

Regarding specs, the RTX 4080 will come equipped with 16 GB of GDDR6x memory and 9728 CUDA Cores. The GPU will also support 4th generation TENSOR Cores and 3rd generation RT Cores which should provide better raytracing and DLSS 2.0 performance over its predecessors. So the RTX 4080 might still have a winning chance against the Radeon RX 7900 XTX when it comes to raytracing performance.

What are your thoughts about the leaked performance benchmark? Would you prefer to go with Nvidia this year even if the competition offers a better-performing GPU?
