New Report Suggests Platinum Games And Microsoft Looking To Revive Scalebound

Scalebound Might Be Coming Back!

Platinum Games is among the most notable hack-and-slash game developers. The studio has produced massive hits like Metal Gear Rising Reveangance and Bayonetta, with many critically acclaimed games to their name.

In 2014, the developer announced Scalebound, an Xbox One exclusive developed in collaboration with Microsoft. The game was set to be Platinum’s most ambitious project, based on the action-RPG genre with larger-than-life Dragon companions.

The game faced many issues during development and ultimately never saw the light of day. However, a new rumor from Xbox Era’s Nick Baker suggests that Platinum Games and Microsoft want to revive the Scalebound IP.

Talking on the latest Xbox Era podcast episode, Nick stated,

“Platinum might be working with Xbox to try and bring back Scalebound.”

While this might sound exciting and bring joy to fans of the canceled IP, Nick also states that this will not happen anytime soon. He said,

“Look it’s very early(in planning). Don’t ask me when; this is a long time away.”

The leaker also claims to have no idea about the future direction of the rumored project. While Microsoft could be interested in rebuilding the game from previous leftovers, Platinum Games and Xbox may also try to start from scratch. Nick does not know about the exact direction of the project.

As stated previously, Scalebound had several development issues. Vice President of Platinum Games, Hideki Kamiya, recently discussed some of the team’s hurdles during Scalebound’s development.

According to Hideki Kamiya, the team was inexperienced with Unreal Engine and had no experience with an online title. He also stated that Microsoft should not be blamed for the fate of Scalebound, with Platinum Games’ inexperience being the leading cause behind the cancellation.

While Scalebound was based on a fascinating concept, the gameplay shown above demonstrates that the game was far from ready. Early gameplay showed poor frame rates and presented a game that still needed a lot of time before being prepared for release.

However, Platinum Games is still determined to realize its grand vision for the game. Hideki Kamiya has previously expressed interest in reviving Scalebound, and Microsoft’s Xbox Series consoles also provide adequate hardware for such an ambitious title.

Only time will tell if Scalebound will return. Nonetheless, this is exciting information for the fans and the passionate team at Platinum Games.
