PlayStation Anticipates Decline In First-Party Title Sales This Year

Not Enough First-Party Releases For 2023!

Sony has released PlayStation financial results for FY 2022 Q4, which contain intriguing details. The results focus mainly on sales but also reveal vital information about future expectations.

According to the documents, Sony expects a decrease in sales for their first-party titles this year.

This could be attributed to Sony not having many first-party titles planned for 2023, with Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 and The Last of Us multiplayer being the only major first-party games still expected to release this year.

PlayStation previously released multiple high-profile first-party titles like God of War Ragnarok, Horizon Forbidden West, and Gran Turismo 7 in 2022.

The gaming giant could, however, launch various live service free-to-play multiplayer games this year. Previously, job listings also suggested that The Last of Us multiplayer game in development could take a free-to-play approach.

As such, it makes sense that first-party game sales will be lower than last year. A multiplayer Horizon game is also in development, although it is unknown when the game will be launched.

Nonetheless, much of Sony’s first-party slate for PS5 has remained a mystery. The gaming giant has previously revealed Marvel’s Wolverine from Insomniac Games. Still, it remains to be seen what developers like Naughty Dog, Suckerpunch, and Sony Santa Monica are working on next.

In addition, the documents also disclosed a 7% rise in hardware sales this year. PlayStation shipped 6.3 million consoles this year, achieving a world record for shipping the most console units in Q1 of any year.

While the documents indicate a decrease in title sales, they also anticipate a surge in hardware sales next year, likely due to the current interest in PS5 and reported launch of two consoles: a handheld PlayStation console and a more advanced PlayStation 5 Pro.
