Disc Model Could Cost $550 At Release!

Story Highlights
  • As the PS5 enters the second half of its lifespan, Sony is preparing for the PS5 Pro.
  • This console is expected to launch in late 2024, bringing an upgraded RDNA 3 GPU and more capable hardware.
  • According to an analysis of leaked hardware specifications, the console could be priced at $500 for the digital version.

Sony is gearing up to expand its console ecosystem with the PS5 Pro. The base model already dominated the competition last year, and Sony now seeks to gain control through the most powerful console hardware on the market.

Various leaks have pointed to impressive ray tracing and machine learning capabilities from this hardware, but an analysis now points to a rough price estimate. According to Moore’s Law is Dead, Sony could launch the PS5 Pro for $500.

Why it matters: The price tag seems believable since the PS4 Pro mirrored its predecessor’s launch price tag at release.

Moore’s Law is Dead recently discussed his leaked specifications for the PS5 Pro. The console is expected to include a 56CU(60CUs total) RDNA 3 GPU, 18Gbps of 16GB GDDR6 memory, and the same Zen 2 CPU currently found in the base model.

He argues that this console is a conservative upgrade over the original model. This should make it relatively cheap to manufacture, putting costs in line with Sony’s investments into the base PS5 at release.

Therefore, Sony could sell the digital model for $500. It is important to note that digital models are generally more profitable for Sony, making it easy to take a small loss on the hardware.

Moore’s Law is Dead asserted that he discussed this idea with reliable sources who did not seem unconvinced by the idea of a $500 mid-gen refresh from Sony.

No one has shot down this idea by me.

If this were to happen, Sony would likely lower the price of the PS5 Slim to $400 and $450 for the digital and disc models, respectively. This model starts at $450, but a price cut could arrive in time for the PS5 Pro’s release, repeating a similar scenario seen with the PS4.

However, Moore’s Law is Dead also clarifies that Sony has yet to decide on a price.

With a potential $500 price for the digital model, Sony could price the disc variant for $550, carrying forward an external disc drive upgrade for $100. The same strategy is currently used for the base Slim model.

A full reveal with all the details of this mid-gen refresh is not too far now. With Sony expected to launch the console by November, more details about the hardware should be on the way, whether through additional leaks or an official announcement.
