PS5 Pro Boasts Better Visuals With Enhanced Performance In The Last of Us

But PSSR Still Causing Performance And Visual Issues!

Story Highlight
  • The Last of Us games delivers much improved visuals on the PS5 Pro.
  • The performance is also solid in most cases with the games even hitting over 100 FPS.
  • PSSR is still causing issues with image quality and performance on the Pro console.

PlayStation 5 Pro has been a mixed bag so far. It promised a big upgrade over its predecessor but has failed to impress in most games. However, the performance and visual upgrades with The Last of Us are impressive on the PS5 Pro.

Why it matters: TLOU utilizes the PS5 Pro’s full potential by delivering a performance boost that was actually promised with the console. But, it too like many other titles has PSSR upscaling issues

In Digital Foundry’s testing, TLOU parts 1 and 2 deliver an upgraded experience on the Pro console. Both the base and Pro PS5 render at 1440p with performance mode but the the latter upscales to 4K using PSSR.

This results in substantially better visuals with higher graphical fidelity, much-improved anti-aliasing, and higher foliage. Testing for disclusion issues doesn’t show any artifacts either. But there is a slight instability in visuals which can seem a bit grainy.

The fidelity mode too has improved image quality and targets 4K at 30 FPS. But at 120Hz output, it can also push a very stable 40 FPS with unlocked frames. But the real difference comes when you enable VRR on a compatible display.

PS5 Pro delivers better performance in TLOU

The PS5 Pro often hits over 100 FPS, in fact in some cases it can even deliver 25% better frame rates compared to the base PS5 with similar settings. However, the performance can take a hit in some cases due to PSSR.

This brings us to the issue of PSSR. The upscaling tech has been criticized for ruining visuals. It also seems to be quite heavy on the system, leading to reduced FPS in PS5 Pro in certain spots of the game.

But, overall Naughty Dog seems to have done a good job with the PS5 Pro. PSSR is also rumored to get better over time and promises to deliver exceptional quality with the much-anticipated GTA 6.
