PS5 Pro Lacks Raw Power For 60FPS In GTA 6, Concludes Analyst

GTA 6 Expected To Prioritize Visuals At 30FPS!

Story Highlights
  • An analyst says that GTA 6 on the PS5 Pro will likely be capped at 30 FPS.
  • The 10% boost to the CPU clock speed won’t be much of a game-changer since the console is still using the Zen 2 lineup.
  • However, the PS5 Pro could show significantly better ray tracing than the base console.

Amidst the news of GTA 6 potentially releasing in February 2025, Digital Foundry has claimed the game will skip 60FPS on the consoles as we predicted back in December.

Sony has reportedly prepped the PS5 Pro for GTA 6, but its console is not equipped with enough hardware to brute force its way to 60FPS.

Why it matters: GTA 6 has been deemed gaming’s most important launch yet since it will impact the entire industry.

Despite the PS5 Pro leaks pointing to a 50% performance uplift over the base hardware, it is understood that the console is still using the trusty Zen 2 CPU first introduced in the PS5 over three years ago.

Even with all the extra Teraflops, the Zen 2 CPU will remain the primary bottleneck. Evidently, Rockstar Games is pushing simulation, physics, and NPC density for GTA 6, all things that tax the CPU.

This is the primary reason veteran analysts like Richard Leadbetter from Digital Foundry concluded that the PS5 Pro would not be able to target 60FPS. According to Richard, the odds of 60FPS gameplay on consoles are next to zero.

Unless there’s some magical CPU stuff done by Rockstar, I don’t see it happening.

However, he states that the 10% higher clocks on the CPU will improve the lows in the worst-possible scenarios, making the game smoother and more consistent at the expected target of 30FPS.

GTA 6 Might Set New Records For NPC Density

Despite the distaste for 30FPS, we don’t find much wrong with the title running at this frame rate. Rockstar Games is always known for pushing visual fidelity, and a 30FPS target will help it push the new hardware to its limits.

On that note, the PS5 Pro will remain the best place to play GTA 6. With the rumored RDNA 4 ray tracing, this console might also offer noticeably better ray tracing in this game than the PS5 or Xbox Series X.

GTA 6 will arrive on PC later, so those looking to play at 60FPS might need to wait an extra year or two. Ultimately, we believe the 30FPS tradeoff will be worth it.
