For the unfamiliar, Arthur’s horse dies in the game’s final mission when he confronts Micah and is suddenly ambushed by the Pinkertons.
While fleeing from Micah and the Pinkertons, Arthur’s horse gets caught in the shootout. This leads to its death, but Arthur Morgan does not immediately leave the horse to flee.
The gunslinger takes a moment to thank and comfort his loyal companion before it passes away, leading to one of the most heartwarming and emotional scenes in Red Dead Redemption 2.
Fans chose the horse’s death over Arthur’s demise, which is also regarded as one of the most tragic moments in gaming history. Referring to the death, one Redditor wrote:
“I stopped playing for a few weeks after my horse died.”
Throughout the game, players develop a strong bond with Arthur Morgan’s horse as they care, feed, and ride with it. Therefore, witnessing the horse’s death becomes a profoundly emotional and heartbreaking moment for players.
After witnessing this scene, some players chose to restart the mission and release the horse into a field, opting to ride another horse for the last mission to avoid the death of their beloved companion.
While the freed horse is also permanently gone after Arthur’s death, fans like to believe that the horse still lives somewhere, even if it cannot be inherited by John, the protagonist in the game’s epilogue.
