Redfall from Arkane Studios is finally set to launch exclusively for Xbox Series X|S and PC on May 2 after facing multiple delays. While there is plenty of information on the game, the developers have revealed more details on the performance.
According to Redfall’s official Twitter account, the game is skipping 60 FPS mode at launch and only launching with quality mode. A performance mode will be added later in the game with an update, although it is not specified when it will arrive.
Redfall is launching on Xbox consoles with Quality mode only:
Xbox Series X: 4K 30 FPS
Xbox Series S: 1440p 30 FPS
60 FPS Performance mode will be added via game update at a later date. pic.twitter.com/NLaGsMbwdW— Redfall (@playRedfall) April 12, 2023
The game will run at a 4K resolution capped at 30 FPS on the Xbox Series X and 1440p resolution capped at 30 FPS on the more affordable Xbox Series S. For those not familiar, the Quality mode prioritizes resolution over framerate, whereas the performance mode does the opposite.
Previously, games like Gotham Knights have received backlash for being limited to 30 FPS on consoles. With the more powerful hardware in Xbox Series S|X and PS5, 60 FPS has become common across the gaming industry.
Therefore, fan demand for this smoother frame rate has also increased over previous generations. However, at present, Redfall will only support 60 FPS on the PC platform.
The game has unsurprisingly received criticism for this announcement, and some fans have even suggested that the game should be delayed until Arkane Studios can launch with 60 FPS on consoles.
Redfall has previously also faced backlash following the requirement of an online connection for the single-player mode, although Arkane Studios may be looking to remove this requirement.
