NetherRealm Studios was born after Midway Games filed for bankruptcy. Following the collapse, Midway Games’ IPs were acquired by Warner Bros, and NetherRealm Studios was taken from the ashes of the previous studios.
NetherRealm Studios retained much of the talent from Midway Games, with legendary developers like Ed Boon continuing to work on Mortal Kombat for the studio. The studio immediately found a major with Mortal Kombat 2011, bringing the series back to its roots with a reboot focusing on 2D fighting gameplay compared to the 3D gameplay of prior entries.
