The Last of Us Remake was rumored since the TLOU 2’s patch for the PS5. Finally, we got the much-awaited announcement at the Summer Game Fest 2022. The game was announced with a trailer displaying graphically improved scenes with much better rendering and details.

Naughty Dog has previously patched their games for a better experience on the PlayStation 5 already. The Last of Us 2 was updated to better adapt to the PS5. Similarly, Naughty Dog has also launched Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection PS5, and it has a somewhat similar trailer rendering and details to that of the TLOU Remake.

This is interesting as the Uncharted trailers were rendered at 1440p rather than 4K. Even the game runs natively at 60 FPS at 1440p, though you can bump the resolution to 4K, which will result in 30 FPS.

According to the analysis performed by Digital Foundry, The Last of Us Part 1 Remake may also be aimed at 1440p. The hair in The Last of Us Part 2 on PS4 Pro and PS5 at 1440p has a noisy, aliased resolution, compared to Uncharted 4 at 4K, which has less aliasing and higher temporal stability.

Suppose you look closely at Joel’s beard hair in Last of Us Remake. In that case, you will see the difference in rendering and details compared to the rest of the pictures at 4K, indicating The Last of Us Part 1 Remake could run at 1440p/60FPS or 4k/30FPS same as Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection on PS5.

The rest of the trailer is made up of character-focused story cinematics. Character rendering has improved dramatically from the first game, with much more realistic skin, precise self-shadowing, true-to-life clothes, and, of course, entirely recreated models among the many enhancements. To some extent, the cinematics has been re-animated as well. The majority of the adjustments here are subtle but welcome, such as more realistic lip-sync and less robotic eye movement.

In all fairness, if we compare it to the actual version on the PS4, the PS5 remake looks much closer to The Last of Us 2 because remaster uses the same game engine. And that by no means is bad, as The Last of Part 2 was a beautiful game with breathtaking environments.

Even with all the debates about whether the game was necessary or justified its $70 price tag, there is no doubt that it looks great and much improved. It is even worth it for the people who didn’t get to play the original version. So if you were looking to play The Last of Us on your PS5 you better wait for the remake to hit the stores.

The Lat of Us Remake is set to launch on September 9, 2022, on PS5 and is also in development for PC, with the launch later down the line. We are excited to witness all the changes in person and relive the story of Joel and Ellie.
