Majority of Top Rated Games In 2023 Are Remasters or Remakes

2023 Is The Year For Remasters!

The first few months of 2023 have been great for the gaming industry. With new games like Hi-Fi Rush and Hogwarts Legacy, the industry has already had a few hits, with more expected to come soon.

The slate of remasters and remakes has been even more impressive. Critics and audiences have been so impressed with these games that the top 10 list on Metacritic is dominated by remasters and remakes.

As seen above, the top 3 spots are occupied by the highly rated Metroid Prime, The Witcher 3, and Resident Evil 4.

All three games are no strangers to this kind of reception. These games have been considered revolutionary for their respective genres, and faithful remakes have helped them once again rise to popularity.

No new game is on the list before the 9th spot, occupied by the highly popular Hi-Fi Rush from Tango Gameworks. The game was released in January and came without an initial announcement.

Hi-Fi Rush quickly rose to popularity, with positive reception from the general public and critics alike. A vibrant art style, energetic soundtrack, and engaging combat helped the game stand out from other releases in 2023 so far.

The recent Persona 4 Golden remaster and EA Motive’s Dead Space Remake are at the bottom of the list, with neither game falling below the 89/100 rating.

While this might seem concerning for some, the year is just getting started. As stated earlier, Hogwarts Legacy has already been an enormous success, with the game falling just short of the top 10 rankings.

The upcoming months will bring sequels to GOTY winners and new IPs from beloved developers. This includes games like The Legend of Zelda: Tears of The Kingdom, Final Fantasy 16, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, Starfield, and more.

As such, fans will have no shortage of games to enjoy, and the top 10 may look very different by the end of the year. However, the popularity of remasters and remakes is undeniable, making it clear that gaming audiences are very fond of older classics being brought up to par with modern standards.
