Recently, Ubisoft has faced controversy from fans after a user posted an email with Ubisoft warning them that their account would be deleted within 30 days if they did not log back in.
In response, Ubisoft clarified that accounts inactive for extended periods would be deleted, but they would receive a 30-day warning before doing so, during which users could log back in to reclaim their accounts.
However, this explanation backfired for the French-based gaming publisher, as many fans expressed their rage on social media. In an email to IGN, Ubisoft addressed the situation and reassured users that accounts with purchased games would not be deleted.
They assured fans that their digital game library was safe.
Why it matters: Initially, users panicked about possibly losing their digital game library, but Ubisoft’s clarification and reassurance should put fans at ease.
Ubisoft stated that its account deletion practices align with the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), which governs the duration for which companies can retain users’ personal information.
Additionally, the company mentioned that they have been deleting accounts for many years; however, it was not until recently that this issue gained significant attention.
Ubisoft considers multiple factors before deleting an account, such as the duration of inactivity. They also clarified that accounts with purchased games are not eligible for deletion.
Furthermore, Ubisoft claims that it did not delete accounts that were inactive for less than four years, establishing the 4-year timeframe before account deletion.
Despite Ubisoft’s assertion that accounts with purchased games are not deleted, an article on PCWorld featured a user claiming that their account with purchased games was deleted, contradicting the company’s statement.
Nonetheless, this issue highlights the drawbacks of digital media. Following the issues, Ubisoft account owners are advised to regularly check their accounts to avoid any problems in the future.
