Why We Need An Open-World Avatar: The Last Airbender Game

Expert Verified By

Almost 20 years and still haven't had an open-wolrd game...

Story Highlights
  • An open-world game from the Avatar franchise has huge market potential since all the previous games were subpar.
  • Fans have been craving one for the longest time and even created a fan base open-world concept game called ‘Avatar 2020 Dreams.’
  • The game could focus on exploring the iconic areas, have innovative mechanics, and could feature a multiplayer mode.

Avatar: The Last Airbender doesn’t have any decent AAA games. Today we’ll explore why we not only want one but also need one.

Huge Market Potential

Believe it or not, there hasn’t been any decent AAA Avatar: The Airbender game in a long time. All the games released were either 2D ones, had a locked camera, or simply didn’t contain full free-roam ability.

The last three Avatar games were The Legend Of Korra (2014), Generations (2023), and Quest For Balance (2023). While Legend of Korra wasn’t fully 3D, Generations focused on combat only, and Quest of Balance had a locked camera despite being 3D.

Last Avatar Game

The latest game in the Avatar franchise is Avatar: The Last Airbender: Quest of Balance. However, this game remains true to the franchise’s identity, which is based on solving puzzles using the four elements.

This game also features the switching of the character to aid each other by solving puzzles with respect to each of the character’s abilities. Being created in Unreal Engine 5, this game does appear decent with great lighting and shadows.

However, this game still lacks depth and has left the fans disappointed. The camera was locked in one place the whole time, and the characters could only move in a manner similar to that of the older Avatar games.

Apart from the puzzles and the ongoing map, there wasn’t any open-world experience, so you’re limited to the route the game provides you. This goes to show that Avatar: The Airbender game hasn’t reached its full potential in the gaming industry.

Strong Fanbase

Avatar games have been out since 2006, and it’s been almost twenty years, and we still haven’t got any full open-world free-roam AAA game from this franchise. Since Avatar wasn’t making a game, fans decided to take matters into their own hands.

In 2020, a fan-made Avatar Four Seasons” project was initiated to create a 3D open-world Avatar game. The game is made on Dreams on PS4, and anyone can play it to explore its potential.

This game starts with a story similar to that in the anime and consists of a few cutscenes. It utilizes all four elements, with Aang’s air ball used as a traveling device, fire and water for combat, and earth as a barrier to protect against attacks.

Aang can also fly across the map using his glider, which is satisfying to both watch and play. This shows the passion fans have for the love of this game. All the features used in this game merely reflect what the fans want from the official game.

Insomniac’s Magical Touch

Now, if Insomniac were to make an Avatar game, it would be the cherry on top. Insomniac is known to create the best games because of its exceptional story-telling, rich character development, and innovative gameplay mechanics.

Story-Telling & Character Development

Insomniac’s strong narrative is evident in Spider-Man 2 and Ratchet & Clank. Their games also follow the emotional arcs of the characters, which strengthens the bond between the audience and the characters.

This would be the case for the characters in the Avatar universe as well. Insomniacs can carry out or even enhance the character that is present in the anime with their visual storytelling.

Innovative Gameplay Mechanics

We’ve experienced Insomniac’s smooth gameplay mechanics and Spider-Man: Miles Morales is one of its fine examples. It is known to create satisfying gameplay where the web swinging is seamless and somewhat effortless.

The mechanics implemented in an Avatar game will help create seamless movements using the four elements. If they were to add a glider part, they would make it move so smoothly.

Open-World Exploration

The game could allow us to explore iconic locations such as Ba Sing Se, the Southern Water Tribe, the Air Temples, and the Fire Nation. Using the four elements to travel across the map would be fun for completing both the main and side quests.

Multiplayer Mode

Fortnite, which crossed 6M players, recently added and collaborated with Avatar to include the infamous glider and the four elements. This re-ignited fans’ craving for a multiplayer game mode in an upcoming game or at least a coop mode to enjoy the game with friends.
